Melanie Castro

Dancer/Performer/Choreographer

The universe told me I am everything. So if I am everything, does that mean everything lives in me? I am the homeowner of a mansion the size of a universe. Who gave me such responsibility!? I'm scared! She told me every night - ego, trauma, honor and beauty sit at her doorstep. Boundless they all are. Special they’ve made this home to be. So, I too sit at her doorstep. I want to become you, I told the mansion, but no response. Patiently I waited, until I heard the sweet sound of the doors opening. I walked in. Ego, trauma, honor and beauty left behind. It's like the mansion knew exactly who I was, but no one was there. Just me.

I asked her where do you hide?

She smiled, and I knew this because the hair on my arms went up.

I see no one.

So then I asked, Where do you heal?

Now I can hear her laughing. She’s always laughing and don’t ask me how I know.

But I still see no one.

So when can I come?

in a familiar voice, she finally says

       Indefinitely…………

                                        and always.

She sounds a lot like me. I’m confused,

But then she softly says

All this time you’ve been standing on the wrong side. This mansion would wait for you even if the doorstep is as far as you would go. It's time to let you know...

                                                                                                                     Welcome home

ABOUT ME

My name is Melanie Castro, a dancer and performer based in Harlem, New york. I am 21 years young and currently completing my BFA in dance at the University of The Arts (Spring 2021). I have been dancing all my life but without resources and a lack of training, I had to fight for a chance to dance at the age of 17. Through mimicking dance videos, street dancers, and movies, I took a leap of faith and auditioned for The University of The Arts back in 2017. Since then I have danced alongside artists like Love & Hip Hop star Britney Taylor, performed in the legendary Apollo Theater, Whitney Museum, New York Sybarite production, Queens Pride Parade and much more. I have now branched into teaching, acting, modeling, and choreographing my own work. As I approached dance without any guidance, I had to put myself out there in hopes that it would place me somewhere. Because of this, I feel devoted to being an inspiration to people that come from the same lack of resources I’ve experienced. The depth of my struggles are what motivate my journey, but the pure joy of manifesting my wildest dreams is what makes it worth growing through.

Keep up with me on
